Wood Mouse – Apodemus sylvaticus
The Wood Mouse or Field Mouse is the second common mouse species you are likely to see in homes and businesses across Hull and East Yorkshire. The Wood Mouse is also found right across Europe and even North Africa. Lighter in colour compared to the House Mouse, Wood Mice are a light brown/orangey colour but are otherwise similar in size/appearance.
Although common Wood Mice are less likely to be found in occupied buildings compared to House Mice, but will seek shelter inside during winter months and are often found in garden sheds and outbuildings where they can cause damage to property through gnawing. Other tell tale signs of Wood Mouse include finding food stuffs covered over with seemingly random objects, which is a behaviour unique in rodents as the Wood Mouse is the only UK rodent to cache food sources in this way.
Similarly to House Mice, Wood Mice will also leave around 80 droppings per day spread across wherever it travels and will also urinate constantly to mark territory and therefore areas can become heavily contaminated very quickly.
Reaching maturity at between 6-8 weeks Wood Mice will mate between March to October depending on seasonal temperatures. Most Mice in the UK will live to around 12 months although the average life span is just 3-4 months.
As omnivores mice will eat a mixture of foods with the Wood Mouse having a preference for tree seed crops such as acorns, beech nuts, Hawthorne berries and Sycamore seeds. When these particular sources of food are unavailable the Wood Mouse will eat insects such as Snails and Slugs.
All rodents including mice can pose a serious risk to your health and spread a number of diseases including, Weils disease, Listeria, Salmonella, E.Coli and Hantavirus so it is vitally important to ensure good hygiene practises whilst dealing with a mouse infestation.
