There are 6 species of Gull which may be regularly seen in the UK, the Greater Black Backed Gull, Common Gull, Kittiwake, Lesser Black Backed Gull, Herring Gull and Black Headed Gull. It is these last 3 species of Gull that you are most likely to see along the coast and in fields around Hull, Beverley and East Yorkshire.
While the differences in appearance between Gulls are numerous all follow a similar breeding pattern which runs between March and July and will produce up to 3 eggs per pair. Gulls are long lived birds and may live for as many as 30 years. During this time they will typically return to the same nesting site year after year. After reaching maturity a Gull will also return the area it was born to breed and therefore local populations can grow quickly.
Gulls are a predatory species and have been known to feed on small mammals, naturally fish form a large part of a Gulls diet but they are also opportunistic feeders eating from bins spilled floor on the food and even attempting to steal food from unsuspecting humans.
Gulls can be incredibly noisy, both vocally and through their movement on surfaces such as flat roofs, this noise maybe the first sign of Gulls using your property. Gulls will often construct their nests behind or on top of chimney stacks, this can mean large deposits of nesting materials on your property which may clog up chimneys and guttering.
With Gulls also comes guano, Gull guano contains pathogens which are hazardous to human health and has been known to cause numerous cases of Salmonella and Psittacosis caused through either direct contact with guano or by inhaling dust contaminated with Gull droppings. Gulls and their nesting behaviour may also be responsible for the introduction of secondary pests such as Fleas, Flies, Lice and Mites in your home or business.
While all UK Gulls are protected by the European Birds Directive licences can be obtained to help control populations. In addition to this when Gulls become a problem or come in to conflict with human activities Viking Pest Control can also install a number of products specifically designed to prevent the nesting and perching of Gulls around your home or business.
