House Mouse – Mus Musculus
Originating from Central Asia little is known about how the House Mouse came to arrive in the UK but it is thought to have been first recorded in Britain during the 9th century. The House Mouse now very much a common sight in the Hull and East Yorkshire and remains active all year round.
House Mice are incontinent and will leave around 80 droppings per day wherever it travels and will also urinate constantly to mark territory and therefore areas can become heavily contaminated very quickly. Aside from droppings, other signs of House Mice can include, scratching noises, gnawing of stored goods and textiles, smells or greasy smear marks which are left on objects the mice come into regular contact with.
Reaching maturity at between 6-8 weeks a female can give birth to a litter of 6-8 pups between 5-8 times per year after a gestation period of 20 days. Most Mice in the UK will live to around 12 months although the average life span is just 3-4 months.
House Mice can survive without the need for water and will only drink if water is available. Most of their moisture comes from their food although only need to eat around 3g of food per day but can consume up to 20% of their own body weight. Mice are repeat feeders and will visit a feeding site as often as 20 times per day.
Unlike Rats which can appear to be weary of new objects the House Mouse is naturally inquisitive and will want to explore new objects it comes into contact with. The House Mouse is also very flexible and can squeeze its body through gaps and holes the size of a HB pencil, thus highlighting the need for a thorough inspection of property to be undertaken.
All rodents including mice can pose a serious risk to your health and spread a number of diseases including, Weils disease, Listeria, Salmonella, E.Coli and Hantavirus so it is vitally important to ensure good hygiene practises whilst dealing with a mouse infestation.
